From the moment someone hears the words “you have leukaemia,” life changes forever. At Leukaemia Care, we are here to make sure that no one has to face that journey alone and in the first half of 2025, thanks to your support, we’ve been there for thousands of people when they needed it most.

Providing emotional support when it matters

A diagnosis can bring shock, fear and uncertainty. This year so far:

  • 62 people have accessed private counselling through our Counselling Service — 89% of whom have either completed their sessions or are currently receiving counselling.
  • 800 people have attended our support groups, with 60% saying they felt more positive about their diagnosis and more connected to others afterwards.
  • 37 people have been newly matched with a buddy, and our trained buddy network has given 735 hours of one-to-one, peer-to-peer support.

As one person told us, “Having a buddy definitely helped me brace for what is coming next. It was important to hear the experience from someone who has gone through a similar circumstance to mine.”

Easing financial pressures

Blood cancer doesn’t just affect health; it can hit hard financially, too. From January to June 2025:

  • 292 people have received £50,000 in direct financial support through our Cost-of-Living Fund.
  • 23 financial grants and 99 nights of accommodation have been provided through our CAR-T Away from Home Service.
  • More than 200 people have been supported by our Welfare Officer, including help with benefits applications.

One family told us, “Having a sick child is stressful enough without the added stress of finding accommodation and the financial worry that goes with being away from home for a long period of time. We are extremely grateful to the charity.”

Sharing trusted information

Access to accurate, understandable information saves lives:

  • Our accredited online information was viewed 20,258 times and 8,417 printed resources were sent to patients, families and healthcare professionals.
  • 9 out of 10 people would recommend our information to another patient or family member.
  • Our Spot Leukaemia campaign reached 17 million people, starting vital conversations that could lead to earlier diagnosis.

Being there, every step of the way

From the first questions after diagnosis to navigating treatment and recovery:

  • Our nurse-led helpline answered over 600 calls and 346 WhatsApp messages.
  • 417 people received guidance from our Hospital Navigators in 22 hospitals across the UK.
  • 70 people received advocacy support, from employment rights to travel insurance advice.

As one person put it, “You feel like someone is invested in you and your situation and wants to do their best to help.”
