How to celebrate a rebirthday
A rebirthday marks the day of a life-saving transplant.
A moment to reflect, and to celebrate how far you have come.

What is a rebirthday?
If you have a stem cell or bone marrow transplant, the day the cells are given is often called Day Zero.
It marks the start of your new immune system. Over time, many people begin to celebrate this day each year as their rebirthday.
Some hospitals even mark the moment during treatment. You might be given a small cake, or hear “happy birthday” on the ward.
Each year after that can feel significant. It is a chance to reflect on what you have been through, and how far you have come.
Ten meaningful ways to celebrate a rebirthday
There is no right or wrong way to mark your rebirthday. What matters is that it feels meaningful to you.
Here are some ideas to help you get started:
Have a second birthday celebration
You might want cake, candles, and your favourite people around you. Some people choose a different theme to make it feel separate from their birthday.
Send or receive a rebirthday card
A card can mean a lot. It shows someone you remember their journey and everything they have been through.
Leukaemia Care online shop has two rebirthday cards you could choose from - and all the profits support others affected by leukaemia too. You can see the two designs here.
Write things down
You could write a letter to yourself, your past self, or your donor. This can help you process the day and keep those thoughts for the future.
Plant something
A tree, flowers, or even a small plant can be a simple way to mark growth and change over time.
Share a meal
Spend time with the people who supported you. It could be a home-cooked meal or eating out somewhere special
Give something back
Some people choose to donate or fundraise. This can help others affected by leukaemia feel supported too
Start a tradition
You might take a photo each year, go for a walk, or watch the same film. Small traditions can become very meaningful over time
Share your story
Talking about your experience can help someone else feel less alone.
Do something for yourself
This could be a day out, a short break, or something you enjoy. Your rebirthday is about you.
Take on a challenge
Some people choose to run, walk, cycle or bake to raise funds and awareness.
Acknowledging your donor
If your transplant came from a donor, your rebirthday can bring up strong feelings of gratitude.
If you are able to, you might want to:
- Send a card or message
- Write a letter, even if you do not send it
- Mark the day by thinking about the person who made your transplant possible
If your donor was a family member, this day may feel shared. It can strengthen your connection in ways that are hard to put into words.
Celebrating someone else's rebirthday
If someone close to you has a rebirthday coming up, remembering the date matters.
You could:
- Send a card or message
- Arrange a small get-together
- Cook or bring their favourite food
- Write them a letter about what their journey has meant to you
These small acts can help someone feel seen and supported.
Marking milestone rebirthdays
Some rebirthdays can feel especially important.
The first year
Reaching one year after transplant is a big milestone. It often comes with a mix of emotions.
Five years
For some people, this marks an important point in long-term recovery.
Ten years and beyond
Each year is significant. Reaching ten years can feel like a powerful reminder of what is possible.
