Counselling impact

A blood cancer diagnosis can have a significant emotional impact on people. Patients and their families often need help with this. Leukaemia Care’s counselling service helps people access professional support. It allows them to talk about the challenges they may be facing.

How we support people

Living with blood cancer can affect many aspects of a person’s life. Feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and emotional strain are common. This may happen at different stages - during diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and recovery. Access to professional counselling can help with the emotional impact of their illness. It can support people to process these experiences and manage their feelings.

Leukaemia Care provides counselling grants to help patients and family members. The grant pays for sessions with qualified counsellors. Sessions can be in person, online or by phone, allowing people to receive help in a way that works for them.

The service aims to help when it may otherwise be difficult to find or afford counselling.

In 2025, Leukaemia Care’s counselling service:

  • Enabled 108 people to receive counselling
  • Helped patients and families get professional support during a difficult time

Providing access to counselling helps people talk about their experiences. It gives them the support they need to manage the emotional impact of blood cancer.

What people say about our counselling service

I found out about the Counselling Service through my cancer nurse. I had a very friendly and professional counsellor. It was great to be able to have the opportunity to talk about my feelings on a one-to-one basis.

I was so anxious, confused, and worried. She helped me feel normal and encouraged me to take one day at a time. She had a really calming influence on me. I know I can go back to her anytime if I start to struggle.

I now know I'm not alone with this disease and that I don't have to fight it alone. Others care, and they show it. I am more informed too. I know if I don't understand something I can ask without feeling I'm a nuisance.
