Fundraising safely and legally
Thank you for choosing to fundraise for Leukaemia Care. Your support helps us be there for anyone affected by leukaemia.
Fundraising should be fun and rewarding. It is also important to make sure your activity is safe and follows the law.
Being responsible when fundraising
If you organise a fundraiser in support of Leukaemia Care, you are responsible for making sure your activity is safe and lawful.
This includes making sure:
- everyone taking part is safe
• money is collected and handled properly
• people understand you are fundraising in support of Leukaemia Care
• your activity follows any local rules or regulations
If you are planning a large event or something unusual, please contact us first.
Being clear about Leukaemia Care
When promoting your fundraiser, please make it clear that you are fundraising in support of Leukaemia Care.
You should not suggest that your event is organised or run by Leukaemia Care unless we have agreed this with you.
For example, you could say:
I am fundraising in support of Leukaemia Care.
You should not use the Leukaemia Care logo unless we have given permission.
Collecting donations
There are rules about collecting money from the public.
Public collections
If you want to collect money in a public place, such as a street or shopping centre, you may need a licence from your local council.
Please check with your local authority before organising a public collection.
Private collections
If you collect donations on private property, such as in a pub, shop or workplace, you must have permission from the owner or manager.
Raffles, tombolas and prize draws
Some fundraising activities are classed as lotteries. These include raffles, tombolas and sweepstakes.
Small raffles at events are usually allowed. But there are rules about how tickets are sold, how prizes are given and how winners are chosen.
If you are unsure, please contact us before running a raffle.
Food and drink
If you are selling food at your fundraiser, make sure it is prepared and stored safely.
Where possible, label common allergens so people know what ingredients are included.
If you are running a large event or selling food regularly, you may need to register with your local council.
Safety and insurance
You are responsible for making sure your fundraiser is safe.
Think about possible risks to people taking part or attending.
You should also check whether the venue has suitable insurance, or whether you need your own insurance for the activity.
For larger events or activities involving physical challenges, it may help to complete a simple risk assessment.
Children and young people
If children are involved in fundraising, they should always be supervised by a responsible adult.
If your event is aimed at children, make sure the environment is safe and appropriate.
Taking photos at your fundraiser
Photos are a great way to celebrate your fundraiser and share what you have achieved.
If you take photos at your event, please respect people's privacy and always ask permission before taking or sharing photos of other people.
Photos of children
If children are at your event, you must get permission from their parent or guardian before taking or sharing photos of them.
Parents or guardians should understand why the photo is being taken and where it may be shared, such as on social media.
If permission is not given, you should not take or share photos of that child.
Using online fundraising pages
Online fundraising platforms are an easy and secure way to collect donations.
They send the money directly to Leukaemia Care and provide a clear record of donations.
They also allow donors to add Gift Aid where eligible.
Sending in your fundraising
Once your fundraiser is finished, please send the money you have raised to Leukaemia Care as soon as possible.
If you have used an online fundraising page, this will normally happen automatically.
If you have collected cash, please contact us and we will explain the easiest way to send it to us.
