A new event for Leukaemia Care in 2020

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, charities are trying to work closer together to support patients. September 2020 is also blood cancer awareness month, and we are teaming up with our friends at Lymphoma Action for the Bridges of Britain event

What is ‘Bridges of Britain’?

In 2019, Lymphoma Action created Bridges of London which saw fundraisers walking 11km in a route around London which included 10 famous bridges.

As much as both charities would love to join together on this event in 2020, we do not feel it is appropriate to organise an in-person event at this time. However, we have launched a new event – Bridges of Britain.

We are asking supporters of both charities to walk the same distance as Bridges of London – 7 miles – in the area local to you and incorporate a bridge of your choice on this walk on Sunday 27th September. Can’t make this date? You could do the challenge on any day in September or you could split the distance over the month.

Not sure what bridge you’d like to incorporate? We’ve put together a handy map of famous bridges across the UK. You can find that here. You may want to incorporate smaller, more local bridges too. Let your imagination run wild.

Event date: Sunday 27 September
Distance: 7 miles
Bridges: 1+. (Your route should include at least 1 bridge, but don’t forget there will be a prize for whoever walks over the most bridges on their route!)
Location: All across the UK!
Registration fee: £10 per adult, £5 per child (child tickets are for 4-16 year olds, under 3s go free), or £25 per family (2 adults and 2 children)
Sponsorship target:
£150

How to get involved

  • Register to take part. Why not get everyone in your house involved so you can all walk together?!) Every participant receives an online fundraising pack, a medal and a certificate to thank them for taking part. Adults will also receive a t-shirt to walk in.
  • Plan your 7 mile route to include at least one bridge, and see how many bridges you can fit in!
  • Set up an online fundraising page where your friends and family can sponsor you – our recommended partner for this event is GivePenny (as it’s integrated with Strava, Fitbit and Runkeeper so that you can track your walk, and integrated with Spotify so that you can ask your friends for donations in exchange for adding a song to your playlist) but you can of course use JustGiving, Virgin Money Giving, or set up a Facebook fundraiser if you prefer.
  • Share your fundraising page on social media and ask for donations from your friends and family.
