Actor, TV presenter and celebrity awareness ambassador for Leukaemia CARE, Andrew Hayden Smith, will kick off his ambassador duties, by racing in the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon event for Leukaemia CARE, in memory of his dad.

Andrew, 32, from Gateshead, has been personally affected by blood cancer after his father sadly passed away after his battle with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in November 2015.

Andrew has been given one of the charity’s guaranteed London Marathon places and will join our team of 153 runners to take on the 26.2 miles for his dad.

Andrew said: “I’ve witnessed first-hand just how important it is to have charities like Leukaemia CARE on hand to offer support when people need it most. By taking on this challenge, I aim to raise awareness for the charity and to encourage other people to say yes to a challenge and to do all they can to raise money which will ultimately help to fund resources to help patients and their families cope right through from their diagnosis, to treatment and beyond.

“I'm really excited to be running the 2016 London Marathon with the LC team. Training is going to be tough but I'm up for the challenge and I know it'll all be worth it when I cross the finish line. I'll be running for my dad and the many others who have bravely battled blood cancer. I'll be wearing my Leukaemia CARE vest with pride on the big day!”

Andrew hopes to inspire others like him who have been affected by a blood cancer to take on the ultimate challenge, like a marathon, to raise money and help to raise the awareness of blood cancers, and to help provide vital services that offer support and comfort at a difficult time.

We wish Andrew the best of luck in his training!
