Going on holiday? Whether it’s for a few days or travelling long-haul, it is vital you’re covered before jetting off. It is especially important if you are traveling to a country with high medical costs, to places especially outside of the European Union.  People living with cancer, or those who have had cancer in the past, can find it harder to get travel insurance because they are perceived to be more likely to need medical treatment abroad.

However, some insurance companies now operate on a case by case basis, instead of declining insurance to anyone who has had cancer. Some require a medical certificate to confirm that you are fit enough to travel. Many companies will only cover you for any treatment you may need, as long as it is unrelated to your cancer, which could end up costing you. In this instance, you will need a policy that clearly states you will be covered should you need treatment because of your cancer. As long as you have made the company aware of it, they are knowingly taking the risk with your cover and they must pay according to the policy agreement.

When you approach a company for a travel insurance quote, it will depend on the type of cancer you have or have had. Be prepared to be asked questions about your diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. You will also be asked a lot of questions if you no longer have cancer and have finished treatment. Be sure to tell the company if you have ever had cancer, because if you don’t it will affect what cover you will receive should you need treatment. Insurance companies have different policies on those who have had cancer in the past; some companies need you to be cancer free for three months, some for ten years.

The best thing for you to do is shop around, and make sure you are always clear about what stage you are at with your cancer.

We have a list of travel insurance companies who specialise in helping people affected by a blood cancer. Don’t miss out, call us on 08088 010 444 or email care@leukaemiacare.org.uk
