Housing Benefit
What is it?
Housing benefit may be paid by local councils to people who need help to pay their rent because of low income or state benefit. It is a tax-free income related benefit.
Who is entitled?
- Your savings and capital must be lower than £16,000, unless you are aged 60 or over and getting the ‘guarantee credit’ of Pension Credit
- You can’t live in the home of close relative
- You must not be studying full time (unless you are disabled or have children)
- You must not be an asylum seeker or sponsored to be in the UK
What else do I need to know?
- If you live with a partner only one of you can get Housing Benefit
- If you’re single and aged under 25 you can only get Housing Benefit for bed-sit accommodation or one room in shared accommodation

Council Tax Benefit
What is it?
If you pay a Council Tax contribution and are on a low income you may be able to claim a rebate.
Who is entitled?
- You may be entitled if your income and savings are less than £16,000
- You may get a Second Adult rebate if you share your home with someone who is over 18, not paying you rent, not paying Council Tax themselves or on a low income.
