Help with Health Costs

The following help is available:

  • Free NHS prescriptions
  • Free NHS dental treatment
  • Free NHS sight tests
  • Vouchers towards cost of glasses or contact lenses
  • Free NHS wigs and fabric supports
  • Repayment of necessary travel costs to hospital and back for NHS treatment

Who is entitled?

  • If you are 16, 17 or 18 in full time education you are entitled to all of the above
  • If you or your partner are receiving Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance (income-based), Pension Credit, have an NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate (and in some cases those on Working Tax Credit and Child tax Credit) you are entitled to all of the above plus repayment of the necessary travel costs to hospital and back for NHS treatment
  • There are certain medical conditions that allow you to apply for a NHS Medical Exemption Certificate that will entitle you to receive NHS prescriptions free of charge
  • If you have a continuing physical disability which means that you are unable to leave your home without the help of another person you may also qualify
  • People 60 and over

What else do I need to know?

  • Prescription Pre-Payment Certificates (PPC’s) help people who require large quantities of, or regular prescriptions to reduce the cost where they are not entitled to free prescriptions on other grounds. PPC’s are available for 4 months or a year. A PPC will save you money if you regularly need more than 1 prescription per month.
