Disability Living Allowance

What is it?

Disability Living Allowance is benefit for people who need help with personal care as a result of their illness or disability.

This benefit consists of 2 components – care and mobility. Care is for difficulties looking after yourself and mobility is for difficulties walking or getting around.

Who is entitled?

  • You must be under 65 years of age
  • You must have needed help with personal care because of your illness for the last 3 months
  • You will continue to need help for at least another 6 months

What else do I need to know?

  • You can receive a care component or mobility component or both.
  • You can get Disability Living Allowance even if you are not currently getting the help you need.
  • It is tax-free and not means tested (your income and savings are not taken into account)
  • There are 3 rates of care component – low, middle and high and 2 rates for the mobility component – lower and high. These are based on how much help and care you need.
  • If you are terminally ill, there are special rules regarding Disability Living Allowance. Under these rules, you do not need to meet the three and six month qualifying conditions. Your claim will be dealt with quickly and you will receive the Disability Living Allowance care component at the highest rate. You may also be eligible for the mobility component if you have difficulty walking.
