Types of Legacies
We know that family and friends come first, however, after making provisions for these, there are many ways you can support Leukaemia CARE in your Will.
Residuary legacy - A gift of the remainder of the estate after your loved ones have been cared for and debts have been cleared is called a residuary bequest. This is the most popular way to leave money in your will to a charity as it keeps up with changes in inflation.
A cash or pecuniary legacy - A gift of a fixed sum of money in your Will is called a pecuniary bequest. The value of a pecuniary legacy will reduce over time, as the cost of living and inflation are subject to constant change.
A specific legacy - A particular named item left as a gift in your Will is known as a specific bequest, for example, a piece of jewellery, property or shares. It is important that these are described accurately in the Will to avoid ambiguity.
A reversionary or contingent legacy - A gift in your Will which ensures that loved ones are taken care of first depending upon the occurrence of an event which may or may not happen. An example is a legacy to a charity which applies only if other beneficiaries named in the Will die before the person who made the Will. This means that a son or daughter can leave a legacy to their parent but if the parent dies before the son or daughter the legacy goes to the charity.
