Appeals

Where Leukaemia CARE feel that decisions made by NICE are unfair, we can submit evidence to appeal against their decision. Although we cannot appeal to decisions made by the SMC and the AWMSG, we can submit evidence to assist in and in many instances influence their decision making process.

Bortezomib for relapse Multiple Myeloma

The use of Bortezomib for relapsed Multiple Myeloma was initially not recommended by NICE and, as a result of a joint appeal by Leukaemia CARE, Myeloma UK and Cancerbackup, the appeal was upheld. This year positive NICE guidance was issued recommending its use in patients with Multiple Myeloma at first relapse – an astounding success for everybody concerned.

Dasatinib for Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML)

Evidence submitted to the SMC for Dasatinib – a new treatment for CML and Philadelphia chromosome positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (Ph+ALL) patients who face resistance or intolerance to current therapies. Positive guidance was issued on the use of dasatanib in CML, but not for Ph+ALL patients.

Dasatinib in patients with Imatinib resistance

Similar evidence was submitted to the AWMSG for the use of Dasatinib in patients with Imatinib resistance or intolerance with positive guidance being issued for restricted use in these circumstances. The use of Dasatinib in England has yet to be considered by NICE.

Clofarabine for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia

Evidence submitted to the AWMSG for Clofarabine, a treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in paediatric patients who have relapsed or are refractory after receiving at least two prior courses of treatment.

Leukaemia CARE was also involved in several scoping workshops with NICE during the year to look at the use of Lenalidomide in Multiple Myeloma, and the use of the newer Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors in the treatment of Imatinib resistant or intolerant CML patients.
